Swertia Chirata (Chirayata) Extract – Clinical Series
Also known as: Chiraita, Chirata, Bitterstick, Green Chiretta
Swertia chirata is a potent bitter herb from the Himalayan foothills, revered in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for millennia. Our Clinical Series Chirata Extract is prepared from the whole dried aerial parts of Swertia chirata (Buch.-Ham. ex Wall.) Clarke, standardised for its key bioactive bitter principles: swertiamarin, amarogentin, and sweroside.
Key Benefits
1. Liver Support & Hepatoprotection
- Amarogentin has demonstrated significant hepatoprotective activity in animal models, reducing markers of liver damage (ALT, AST) at doses of 25–50 mg/kg (Singh et al., Phytomedicine, 2016).
- Supports bile secretion and may assist in the management of jaundice and mild hepatitis.
2. Digestive Enzyme Stimulation
- Swertiamarin, a secoiridoid glycoside, is well-documented as a bitter tonic that stimulates the secretion of bile and digestive enzymes (Verma et al., Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2008).
- Traditional use for bloating, flatulence, indigestion, and loss of appetite is supported by its cholagogue action.
3. Blood Sugar Regulation
- Clinical and preclinical data show swertiamarin activates PPAR-γ pathways, improving insulin sensitivity and reducing fasting blood glucose (Saxena et al., Phytotherapy Research, 2010).
- Supports adjunctive use in metabolic health protocols.
4. Antipyretic & Antimalarial Activity
- Amarogentin exhibits antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum in vitro, inhibiting topoisomerase II (Mukherjee et al., Parasitology Research, 1994).
- Traditional Ayurvedic use for intermittent fevers is corroborated by documented antipyretic properties.
5. Antioxidant & Immunomodulatory Support
- Ethanolic extracts of S. chirata demonstrate significant free radical scavenging activity (IC₅₀ ~42 µg/mL in DPPH assay) (Karmakar et al., Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine, 2012).
- May support immune resilience and reduce oxidative burden.
6. Skin & Blood Purification
- Traditional Unani use as a blood purifier (Musaffi Dam) for management of chronic skin conditions including acne, eczema, and furunculosis.
How to Use
- Prepare a kwath (decoction): boil 3–5 g of extract in 150 ml water, reduce to half, strain and drink warm.
- Best taken on an empty stomach in the morning, or as directed by a qualified Ayurvedic or Unani practitioner.
