Suranjan Shirin (Sweet Colchicum)
Botanical Name: Colchicum autumnale
Common Name: Autumn Crocus
Suranjan Shirin is the sweet variety of Colchicum with a long history of use in Unani and traditional herbal medicine. Prepared from the dried corm (rhizome) of the plant, it is valued for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties — especially in conditions affecting the joints.
⚠️ Important: Colchicum autumnale is a potent herb. It should be used only under professional guidance.
Ingredients
- Colchicum autumnale (Autumn Crocus) — dried corm/rhizome, the primary active constituent
- Key active compound: Colchicine — a naturally occurring alkaloid with well-documented anti-inflammatory activity, particularly in inhibiting neutrophil migration and reducing uric acid crystal-induced inflammation
- Additional phytochemicals: demecolcine, colchicosides, flavonoids, and phenolic acids
- No fillers, additives, or preservatives — pure dried herb only
Benefits
Joint & Musculoskeletal Support
- Traditionally used to help manage gout and uric acid–related joint pain
- Supports relief from arthritis, rheumatism, and joint inflammation
- Helps reduce swelling, stiffness, and pain in chronic joint conditions
Anti-Inflammatory & Analgesic Action
- The active alkaloid colchicine has been extensively studied for its ability to inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome activation and reduce acute inflammatory flares (Nuki & Simkin, Arthritis Research & Therapy, 2006)
- Clinically recognised for use in acute gout attacks — colchicine's mechanism of disrupting microtubule polymerisation reduces neutrophil-mediated inflammation
- Traditionally used for body aches and muscular discomfort
Unani Medicine Uses
- Considered Muhallil-e-Waram (anti-inflammatory) in classical Unani pharmacopoeia
- Used in formulations for Waja-ul-Mafasil (joint pain) and Niqris (gout)
- Classified as a Musakkin (analgesic/sedative) herb in Unani therapeutics
How It Is Traditionally Used
- Used in very small, controlled doses
- Often processed or detoxified (Tadbeer) before inclusion in formulations
- Commonly combined with other herbs to reduce toxicity and enhance safety
