St. John’s Wort Extract (Hypericum perforatum)

Sourced from the vibrant yellow flowers of Hypericum perforatum, St. John’s Wort has been used in European herbal medicine for over 2,000 years as a botanical support for emotional well-being and nervous system health. Our premium extract is standardised to key active compounds — hypericin and hyperforin — ensuring consistent potency and efficacy with every dose.

Indicated For

  • Mild to moderate low mood & emotional imbalance
  • Mild anxiety & nervous tension
  • Seasonal mood changes
  • Sleep disturbance associated with nervous restlessness
  • Topical support for minor skin irritations & nerve-related tension

Benefits

Hypericin & Pseudohypericin — Naphthodianthrone Compounds

Hypericin is the principal marker compound of Hypericum perforatum and has been extensively studied for its role in mood regulation. It is believed to modulate serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline reuptake, contributing to its antidepressant-like activity. A landmark meta-analysis published in the British Medical Journal (Linde et al., 1996, updated 2005) analysed 37 randomised controlled trials and concluded that St. John’s Wort extracts were significantly superior to placebo for mild-to-moderate depression and similarly effective to standard antidepressants with fewer side effects.

Hyperforin — Phloroglucinol Derivative

Hyperforin is now recognised as the primary active constituent responsible for the antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of St. John’s Wort. It acts as a reuptake inhibitor of serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline, GABA, and glutamate via a sodium conductive mechanism — a unique mode of action distinct from conventional SSRIs. Research published in Pharmacopsychiatry (Chatterjee et al., 1998) demonstrated that hyperforin-rich extracts produced significant antidepressant effects in double-blind RCTs. Further studies in Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics confirmed its multimodal neurotransmitter activity.

Sleep & Anxiolytic Support

A study in Pharmacopsychiatry (Schulz, 2006) found that St. John’s Wort improved sleep quality in patients with mild depression, increasing deep sleep stages and reducing nocturnal restlessness — consistent with its traditional use as a nervine relaxant.

Topical Anti-inflammatory Activity

Hypericin and flavonoids in St. John’s Wort have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties in topical applications. Research in Journal of Ethnopharmacology supports its traditional use for minor skin irritations, bruising, and nerve-related discomfort when applied in a carrier oil.
