Psyllium Husk Powder (Plantago ovata)

Psyllium husk, derived from the seed husks of Plantago ovata (also known as Isabgol, Ispaghula, or Ashwakarna), is one of the most clinically researched dietary fibres in the world. Composed predominantly of soluble mucilaginous fibre (arabinoxylan), psyllium forms a viscous gel in the gastrointestinal tract that supports bowel regularity, cholesterol reduction, blood sugar management, and satiety. Widely used in Ayurvedic, Unani, and Western herbal medicine for centuries. Available in 50 g and 100 g sizes.

Key Benefits

  • Bowel regularity & constipation relief โ€” soluble fibre absorbs water, softens stool, and promotes healthy gut motility
  • Diarrhoea management โ€” adds bulk to loose stools and normalises transit time
  • Cholesterol reduction โ€” binds bile acids in the gut, reducing LDL cholesterol reabsorption; FDA-approved health claim
  • Blood sugar regulation โ€” slows glucose absorption post-meal, reducing insulin spikes; beneficial in type 2 diabetes management
  • Weight management & satiety โ€” gel-forming fibre promotes fullness and reduces appetite
  • Prebiotic & gut microbiome support โ€” fermented by colonic bacteria to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) supporting gut health
  • Cardiovascular support โ€” combined cholesterol and blood sugar benefits contribute to reduced cardiovascular risk

Clinical Research & Evidence

  • Cholesterol reduction: A meta-analysis of 21 randomised controlled trials published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Anderson et al., 2000) found that psyllium supplementation significantly reduced total cholesterol by 4% and LDL cholesterol by 7% compared to control, supporting the FDA-approved health claim for psyllium and cardiovascular disease risk reduction.
  • Blood sugar & type 2 diabetes: A systematic review in Diabetes Care (Gibb et al., 2015) concluded that psyllium supplementation significantly reduced fasting blood glucose, postprandial glucose, and HbA1c in patients with type 2 diabetes, with effects comparable to some pharmacological interventions at higher doses.
  • IBS & bowel regularity: A randomised controlled trial published in the British Medical Journal (Bijkerk et al., 2009) found that psyllium was significantly more effective than bran or placebo in reducing symptom severity in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), particularly for abdominal pain and stool consistency.
  • Weight management & satiety: Research published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrated that psyllium supplementation before meals significantly increased satiety scores and reduced energy intake at subsequent meals, supporting its role in appetite and weight management.
  • Prebiotic & microbiome effects: Studies in Gut Microbes have shown that psyllium arabinoxylan is selectively fermented by beneficial gut bacteria including Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species, increasing SCFA production and supporting a healthy colonic environment.

Common Uses

  • Daily fibre supplement for bowel regularity
  • Constipation and IBS management
  • Cholesterol-lowering dietary protocols
  • Blood sugar management in type 2 diabetes
  • Weight management and appetite control
  • Gut microbiome and prebiotic support
  • Ayurvedic and Unani digestive formulations

Suggested Use

  • Powder: Mix 1โ€“2 tsp (5โ€“10 g) into a large glass of water (250โ€“300 ml) and drink immediately; follow with an additional glass of water
  • Take 1โ€“3 times daily, ideally before meals
  • Can also be added to smoothies, yoghurt, or porridge

Important: Always take psyllium with plenty of water. Taking without sufficient liquid may cause choking or intestinal blockage. Start with a smaller amount and increase gradually to allow the gut to adjust.

Safety & Precautions

  • Always take with a full glass of water โ€” risk of choking or oesophageal obstruction if taken dry or with insufficient liquid.
  • May reduce the absorption of certain medications โ€” take medications at least 1 hour before or 2โ€“4 hours after psyllium.
  • Not suitable for individuals with bowel obstruction or difficulty swallowing.
  • Introduce gradually to avoid bloating and gas during the adjustment period.
  • Consult a healthcare professional before use if pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing a chronic health condition.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
