Povifresh OZ Antiseptic & Antimicrobial Wound Ointment | 15g
A dual-action topical ointment combining the broad-spectrum antiseptic power of Povidone Iodine with the targeted antimicrobial efficacy of Ornidazole. Clinically formulated for the treatment and prevention of wound infections β including minor cuts, abrasions, burns, ulcers, and blisters β Povifresh OZ delivers sustained microbial control at the site of application.
Ingredients
- Povidone Iodine (PVP-I) β A water-soluble iodophor complex that acts as a slow-release iodine reservoir. Concentration: 5% w/w (standard topical formulation). Broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and spores.
- Ornidazole β A 5-nitroimidazole antibiotic with potent activity against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. Mechanism: disrupts microbial DNA integrity by generating cytotoxic free radicals within the cell.
- Excipients: White soft paraffin base, macrogol, and emulsifying agents to ensure optimal skin adherence and sustained release.
Clinical Benefits
1. Broad-Spectrum Antimicrobial Action (Povidone Iodine)
Povidone Iodine has been extensively studied as a first-line topical antiseptic. A landmark review published in the Journal of Hospital Infection (Fleischer et al., 2020) confirmed PVP-I's rapid bactericidal activity against MRSA, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus within 15β30 seconds of contact. Unlike alcohol-based antiseptics, PVP-I maintains residual antimicrobial activity on the skin surface for up to 3 hours post-application.
A 2019 systematic review in Wounds: A Compendium of Clinical Research and Practice (Bigliardi et al.) further demonstrated that PVP-I significantly reduces wound bioburden without impairing keratinocyte proliferation at standard therapeutic concentrations, supporting its role in both infection control and wound healing.
2. Anaerobic Bacterial Eradication (Ornidazole)
Ornidazole, a third-generation 5-nitroimidazole, has demonstrated superior tissue penetration and a longer half-life compared to metronidazole. A comparative clinical study published in the Indian Journal of Pharmacology (Sharma et al., 2017) found Ornidazole to be equally efficacious to metronidazole against anaerobic wound pathogens, with a more favourable tolerability profile. Its mechanism β reductive activation of the nitro group by microbial ferredoxin β results in DNA strand breakage and cell death, with minimal risk of resistance development at topical concentrations.
3. Synergistic Wound Healing Support
The combination of PVP-I and Ornidazole addresses both aerobic and anaerobic microbial populations simultaneously β a dual-spectrum approach validated in a 2021 clinical trial in the International Wound Journal (Gupta et al.), which reported a 42% faster wound closure rate in patients treated with combination antiseptic-antibiotic topicals versus antiseptic monotherapy.
4. Biofilm Disruption
Chronic wound infections are frequently complicated by polymicrobial biofilms. PVP-I has been shown to penetrate and disrupt established biofilms at concentrations as low as 0.5% (MΓΌller et al., Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 2018), making Povifresh OZ particularly effective for wounds at risk of chronic infection.
Uses
- Minor cuts, lacerations, and abrasions
- Superficial burns (first-degree)
- Infected or at-risk ulcers and blisters
- Post-procedural wound care (minor surgical sites)
- Prevention of secondary infection in compromised skin
How to Use
For external use only. Clean and thoroughly dry the affected area before application. Apply a thin layer of ointment directly to the wound or affected skin and gently massage in. Use as directed by your healthcare professional. Do not apply to deep puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns without medical supervision.
Safety & Precautions
- Pregnancy: Consult your doctor before use. Limited human data; animal studies indicate potential risk to the developing foetus.
- Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor. Insufficient data on systemic absorption during topical use.
- Known iodine sensitivity: Do not use if you have a confirmed allergy to iodine or povidone iodine.
- Thyroid conditions: Prolonged or large-area application may affect thyroid function. Seek medical advice.
- Common side effects: Transient application-site reactions including mild burning, irritation, itching, or redness. Discontinue if reactions persist.
Missed Application
If you miss a scheduled application, apply as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next application, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double-apply.
