Kalmi Shora — Raw Potassium Nitrate Crystals

Kalmi Shora (کلمی شورہ), known in classical Unani and Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia as Shora Qalmi or Salpetre, is a naturally occurring mineral salt — potassium nitrate (KNO₃) — with a long history of use across South Asian and Middle Eastern healing traditions. Our raw, unprocessed Kalmi Shora is supplied in its natural crystalline form, free from additives or fillers.

Traditional & Functional Uses

  • Diuretic & Urinary Support: Widely used in Unani formulations to promote urine flow and support kidney function in conditions such as dysuria and urinary retention.
  • Cooling & Anti-inflammatory: Traditionally applied topically or taken in small doses to reduce internal heat, fever, and inflammation.
  • Dental Sensitivity: Potassium nitrate is a recognised active ingredient in desensitising toothpastes, blocking dentinal tubules to reduce hypersensitivity.
  • Food Preservation: Used as a curing agent (E252) in meat preservation, inhibiting bacterial growth including Clostridium botulinum.
  • Agricultural & Industrial: A key nitrogen and potassium source in fertilisers; also used in pyrotechnics and as an oxidising agent.

Clinical & Scientific Evidence

  • Dental desensitisation: Potassium nitrate (5%) is clinically validated for reducing dentinal hypersensitivity. Multiple RCTs confirm efficacy. (Ref: Orchardson R & Gillam DG. J Am Dent Assoc. 2006;137(7):990–998.)
  • Diuretic properties: Potassium salts are well-established in nephrology for their role in promoting natriuresis and supporting renal electrolyte balance. (Ref: Whelton PK et al. JAMA. 1997;277(20):1624–1632.)
  • Antimicrobial in food safety: KNO₃ as a curing salt inhibits C. botulinum spore germination; reviewed in EU food additive safety assessments (EFSA, 2017).
  • Unani pharmacopoeia listing: Kalmi Shora is listed in the National Formulary of Unani Medicine (NFUM), Government of India, as a compound ingredient in diuretic and antipyretic formulations including Sharbat-e-Bazoori Motadil.
