Dried Whole Elderberries (Sambucus nigra)
Elderberries (Sambucus nigra) are one of the most extensively researched medicinal berries in European and North American herbal traditions. Rich in anthocyanins, flavonoids (quercetin, rutin, kaempferol), vitamin C, and polyphenols, dried whole elderberries are prized for their potent antiviral, immune-modulating, and antioxidant properties. A staple in traditional herbalism for centuries, now validated by a growing body of clinical evidence. Available in 50 g and 100 g sizes.
Key Benefits
- Antiviral & immune support โ anthocyanins and flavonoids inhibit viral replication and stimulate cytokine production to enhance immune response
- Reduces duration & severity of colds and flu โ clinically demonstrated to shorten illness duration by up to 4 days
- Potent antioxidant protection โ among the highest ORAC values of any berry; neutralises free radicals and reduces oxidative stress
- Anti-inflammatory activity โ quercetin and rutin inhibit COX-1/COX-2 pathways and reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines
- Cardiovascular support โ anthocyanins support healthy blood pressure, cholesterol balance, and endothelial function
- Rich in vitamin C & micronutrients โ supports collagen synthesis, skin health, and overall vitality
Clinical Research & Evidence
- Influenza treatment: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of International Medical Research (Zakay-Rones et al., 2004) found that elderberry extract reduced the duration of influenza by an average of 4 days compared to placebo, with significant improvements in symptom severity scores.
- Cold & flu prevention and treatment: A meta-analysis published in Complementary Medicine Research (Hawkins et al., 2019) analysed 5 randomised controlled trials and concluded that elderberry supplementation substantially reduced upper respiratory symptoms, with a mean reduction of 3.89 days in illness duration.
- Antiviral mechanisms: Research published in Phytochemistry (Roschek et al., 2009) identified that elderberry flavonoids bind directly to H1N1 virions, preventing viral attachment to host cells. Cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-sambubioside were identified as the primary active antiviral compounds.
- Antioxidant capacity: Studies in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry confirmed that Sambucus nigra berries possess one of the highest antioxidant capacities among commonly consumed fruits, with ORAC values significantly exceeding blueberries and cranberries, attributed to their dense anthocyanin profile.
- Immune modulation: In vitro research published in the European Cytokine Network (Barak et al., 2001) demonstrated that elderberry extract significantly increased production of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1ฮฒ, TNF-ฮฑ, IL-6, IL-8) in monocytes, confirming its role as an immune activator at the cellular level.
Common Uses
- Elderberry syrup, cordials, and tinctures
- Immune support teas and decoctions
- Cold and flu prevention and recovery blends
- Antioxidant-rich herbal formulations
- Jams, preserves, and culinary preparations (cooked only)
- Seasonal wellness and winter immunity protocols
Suggested Use
- Decoction / Tea: Simmer 1โ2 tbsp dried elderberries in 500 ml water for 15โ20 minutes; strain and sweeten with honey if desired. Drink 1โ2 cups daily.
- Elderberry Syrup: Simmer with water, honey, cinnamon, and cloves; strain and bottle. Take 1 tbsp daily for maintenance or 1 tbsp 3โ4 times daily during illness.
- Tincture: 2โ4 ml, 2โ3 times daily
- Powder (ground): Add to smoothies, juices, or capsules
Important: Raw elderberries contain sambunigrin, a cyanogenic glycoside that can cause nausea. Always cook or properly prepare elderberries before consumption. Do not consume raw.
Safety & Precautions
- Must be cooked before consumption โ raw elderberries may cause nausea and vomiting due to sambunigrin content.
- Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without professional guidance.
- Use with caution in autoimmune conditions โ immune-stimulating properties may exacerbate symptoms.
- Consult a healthcare professional before use if taking immunosuppressant medications.
- Keep out of reach of children.
