Derived from the fruit of Vitex agnus-castus, chasteberry is rich in active compounds like diterpenes (e.g. casticin) and flavonoids that influence hormone activity—especially prolactin and dopamine pathways—making it widely used for female reproductive health issues

✅ Key Uses & Clinical Evidence

1. Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) & PMDD

  • Strongest evidence shows efficacy in reducing breast tenderness (mastalgia) and emotional symptoms like mood swings, irritability, headaches, and bloating, with relief often observed within 1–3 cycles

  • Some trials found chasteberry to improve PMDD symptoms, though generally less effective than SSRIs like fluoxetine, yet still offering benefit with fewer side effects

2. Cycle Regularity & Fertility

  • May help normalize menstrual cycles in cases of luteal phase defect or high prolactin. Small RCTs showed improved progesterone activity and increased pregnancy rates in women with infertility or amenorrhea

  • Anecdotal reports suggest improved cycle length for individuals with PCOS or irregular periods

3. Breast Pain (Cyclic Mastalgia)

  • Multiple RCTs confirm significant reduction in cyclical breast pain within 2–3 cycles of use, likely via prolactin suppression

4. Menopause & Hormonal Imbalance

  • Some use vitex to alleviate menopause-related symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and mood instability, though evidence is much weaker than for PMS indications

5. Endometriosis Support

  • Often included among suggested herbs for endometriosis to help reduce estrogen-dominance and inflammation, but most research remains preliminary and non‑human

6. Mood & Sleep Anecdotes

  • Some informal reports suggest benefits for anxiety, restlessness, and better sleep—possibly secondary to hormonal modulation—though no controlled human trials support this yet

7. Insect Repellent

  • Seed extract in aerosol form has shown mosquito and tick repelling properties lasting several hours in one study
