Bitter orange extract is derived from the peel or immature fruit of Citrus aurantium. Its primary active component is p‑synephrine, an alkaloid structurally similar to ephedrine but with differing pharmacological effects

✅ Main Uses & Proposed Benefits

1. Weight Management & Appetite Suppression

  • Often included in “ephedra‑free” weight loss supplements due to p‑synephrine’s ability to modestly suppress appetite and increase energy expenditure

  • Clinical results are mixed; most studies involve multi-ingredient formulations (e.g., with caffeine), making it difficult to isolate bitter orange’s true effect on weight loss

2. Athletic Performance & Energy

  • Promoted by some brands for enhanced exercise capacity and fatigue resistance. However, most human studies do not show clear benefit when used alone

3. Topical & Aromatherapy Uses

  • Bitter orange essential oil is used in skincare, fragrances, and aromatherapy. It may offer mild antifungal effects, including for athlete’s foot, ringworm, or jock itch—though evidence is limited and often anecdotal

4. Culinary & Traditional Uses

  • Used for marmalade, flavoring, and as an aromatic in beverages and bitters. Bitter orange and its flowers (neroli oil) are also valued in perfumery for floral-citrus notes

  • Historically used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Latin American and Brazilian folk systems as a tonic, sedative, carminative, or for digestive support
